EDLD 9633 (Research Sem III) and EDLD 9634 (Research Sem IV)
I chose to combine these courses in my portfolio because they existed as such throughout the semester. Each assignment connected to another in both courses and built off of each other. For example, Sem III focused on completion of my pre-prospectus draft, but this draft contributed to the development of my mock defense and the infographic I created for my research. I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of this class, as it allowed me to work at my own speed and decide what steps were next for my study. During this spring semester, I finalized a solid version of my pre-prospectus, which I hope to defend this summer. I also honed in on my infographic, which I considered to be a version of the previously completed 3 minute thesis assignment from an earlier semester. Although I have been working on my research since early in my doctoral courses, I felt like this semester really solidified my status as a researcher. I was able to finalize ideas for data collection of my nationally distributed survey and even applied for some outside funding to support incentives for survey completion. This semester gave me a glimpse in to what my dissertation hours will look like, as my cohort members were each on our own path and timeline with our work. However, early in the semester we decided to have Saturday writing days, and these scheduled times have allowed me to stay connected with my cohort. Research Sem IV required us to complete our infographic on our research and also update this portfolio. I have kept up with the portfolio work each semester, so that was not a huge task for me, but I was able to tweak a few elements and make some creative decisions regarding the design. Spring 2021 semester was productive, even if COVID forced us to continue meeting online instead of in-person once a week. I miss the time at Southern once a month, but also was able to tailor the semester to my own needs regarding my research.
